CPD REMINDER:  WHAT YOU AND YOUR ORGANISATION NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CPD COMPLIANCE


      Although most lawyers know what their individual CPD obligations are, we have put together an at-a-glance reference section for training administrators who oversee a practice’s training requirements.

    CPD FOR LAWYERS is designed as a resource for law firms, chambers and in-house legal departments as a whole – including the un-regulated support staff.  We have therefore included, in addition to information on authorised persons (in essence, lawyers, under the Legal Services Act 2007), some additional information on bodies that are not designated as regulators, but do provide members with a CPD and/or training framework.


Solicitors:

  • CPD Regulator: Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA)
  • CPD Year: 1 November – 31 October
  • Annual CPD requirement:  16 hours per CPD year
  • Newly qualified:  Each NQ solicitor is required to take Management Stage One course within the first three years of practice
  • CPD reporting and record keeping requirements: completion and retention of individual CPD record card with random sample audit

Barristers:

  • CPD Regulator: Bar Standards Board (BSB)
  • CPD year:  1 January – 31 December
  • Annual CPD requirement (Established Practitioners):  12 hours per CPD year
  • Newly qualified:  Each NQ barrister is required to undertake the New Practitioners Programme (45 hours of CPD), comprising at least 9 hours of advocacy training and 3 hours of ethics training
  • CPD reporting and record keeping requirements: completion of CPD record card and submission to BSB by 31 January

Legal Executives:

  • CPD Regulator: Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX)
  • CPD year:  1 January – 31 December
  • Annual CPD requirement:
    • Fellows: 16 hours;
    • Graduate Members: 12 hours;
    • Associate Members: 8 hours;
    • Legal Executive Advocates: 16 hours, 5 of which must be gained from advocacy training;
    • Associate Prosecutors: 16 hours, 8 of which must be gained in the area of criminal litigation
  • CPD reporting and record keeping requirements: personal CPD logbook to be submitted annually to ILEX with annual random sample audit of 25% of all members

Licensed Conveyancers:

  • CPD Regulator: Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC)
  • CPD year:  1 November – 31 October
  • Annual CPD requirement:
    • Full license holders: 12 points
    • Limited license holders 6 points

Patent & Trade Mark Attorneys:

  • CPD Regulator: Intellectual Property Regulation Board (IPReg)
  • CPD year:  1 January – 31 December
  • Annual CPD requirement:  16 hours
    • Authorised Litigators: 6 hours of CPD relevant to litigation (3 of which may be included within the standard requirement of 16 hours)

Law Costs Draftsman:

  • CPD Regulator: Association of Costs Lawyers (ACL)
  • CPD year:  1 January – 31 December
  • Annual CPD requirement:  12 hours (including Fellows until 31 December 2011)
  • CPD reporting and record keeping requirements: completion of personal CPD record card and submission to ACL when applying for renewal of membership

STEP Members

  • CPD Regulator: The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners
  • CPD year:  1 April – 31 March
  • Annual CPD requirement (Full member):  10 hours of structured training and 25 hours of unstructured CPD
  • CPD reporting and record keeping requirements: self-certification with random sample audit of CPD records by STEP

Paralegals

  • Not presently regulated, however both the Institute for Paralegals (IoP) and the National Association of Licensed Paralegals (NALP) provide support and a training framework for their respective members.
